Healthy Foods: What to Buy | Food Renegade

This is probably one of the best “guides” on what to buy that I’ve been able to find. A lot of the problems with these days, has more to do with the quality of the food and the additives and processing rather than what the food item actually is. There are loads of in the local that are cheap and highly processed with plenty of additives which will give us , obesity and probably diseases not even discovered yet.

Navigating the world of , , co-ops, farmers markets, and farm stands can be intimidating. With all the variety and competing claims, how in the world can you pick the healthiest foods?

Lessons on Real Food From 100 Years Ago – Food Renegade

I’m looking at a book. It’s the kind of book you’d pick up in an antique store, take home, and treasure — not just because of it’s yellowed pages and delicate binding, but because of it’s utterly fascinating content. It’s called Graded Lessons in Physiology and Hygiene, and it’s a textbook used in the Texas schools in 1908.

I’ve been thumbing through the book for weeks, marveling at just how much knowledge we’ve lost when it comes to food and . Before people began putting their trust in the government, diet dictocrats, and food manufacturers to tell them what to eat, they actually experienced an acute connection with their food that enabled them to make wise judgments about what is and is not healthful based merely on accumulated personal observations.

How Sweet It Isn’t: The truth about artificial sweeteners - Vibrance Nutrition and Fitness Blog

As you probably know, I’m a natural foods kind of guy. Here’s a fascinating article about “” and what we’ve done to ourselves!

A side effect of being a calorie-phobic society is the creation of zero calorie non-foods to give us what we crave () without adding to our caloric load. Since the cyclamates of the 50’s (banned in ‘69 in the US due to connections with ) the food manufacturing industry has been turning out one artificial sweetener after another, often with deliterious effects. Each new version is reported to have no known side effects…partially because testing has been skewed (if the industry sponsors the study, do you think they’ll publish unfavorable results?) and partially because a 12 week study cannot determine long-term effects.

The Price of Real Food - Food Renegade

Here’s an article with much to think about! I’ve been trying to eat more “real” food. It’s tough to make things and eat them and although I’ve lost about 70 pounds in the past year, it’s still a challenge to find new and different things to eat!

Don’t forget.. In the world, there’s no microwave, no TV dinners or many of the “convenience” foods we see in the . What was actually said to me when I started was “We used to say, read the labels, but now we say avoid anything with a label”

I was always a great cook (to hear my “victims” say it), so using more fresh, real ingredients and herbs was a natural! So this article articulates, the “why” of it all..

The farmer I buy my pastured chickens from charges $3.25/lb for a whole . The rancher I buy my pastured beef from charges around $3.80/lb for a butchered, processed, and packaged side of cattle.

To some, this seems expensive. Afterall, sales regularly sell or beef for as little as a dollar per pound.

Yet, these are the same people who are willing to pay almost $10/lb for a box of breakfast cereal.

Real Meat | Food Renegade

Have you ever been to a Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO)? Even know what it is?

It’s a factory farm — an industrial facility — used for finishing livestock, including cows, pigs, chickens, and turkeys, prior to slaughter. Their primary goal? To make the most amount of meat in the shortest amount of time. It’s about efficiency.

Don’t go. Even if you’re daring. Even if you’re brave. You won’t be able to stomach it.

Having is bad enough, but here’s an article with another good reason for bottled water!

Cancer Screening: Does It Really Save Lives?

(NaturalNews) Anne is a good patient. She sees her doctor for regular checkups, has yearly mammograms, Pap tests, and colon screenings, and she even paid for a full-body CT scan out of her own pocket. She figures she’s doing everything she can to make sure she doesn’t get .

Truth is, Anne is doing nothing to prevent . Although screening is billed as a preventive service that saves lives, the best it can do is detect disease in its early stages, when it is supposedly easier to treat. Nevertheless, every year millions of Americans dutifully line up for their screenings, completely unaware that they may be doing more harm than good.
